Types of Water Damage

Category 1:

Clean Water originates from a source that does not pose a substantial harm to humans. Example:sink supply line, falling rainwater or snow.

Category 2:

Gray Water contains a significant degree of chemical, biological and/or physical contamination. Having the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. Example: dishwasher drain, laundry machines, broken aquariums and punctured waterbeds, overflows from toilet bowls with urine, but no feces.

Category 3:

Black Water always contains pathogenic agents. Hazardous and unsanitary “black” water sources are those that arise from large quantities of sewage or other contaminated water sources entering the structure. In situations where structural materials and contents have been heavily contaminated with such materials as pesticides, heavy metals or toxic organic substances, containment procedures are extensive and affected areas/items are always replaced.

The category is determined by the source, contents, history and characteristics of the water and not the color. If not addressed promptly, Category 1 becomes Category 2, then becomes Category 3.
